Baba, Shrii Shrii Anandamurti, left his physical body on 21 October 1990. Today we commemorate the anniversary of that fateful day. This is also a good opportunity to reflect on the great achievements and contributions of Baba’s life, some of which are:Tantric SadguruSublime ideology (Self-Realization and Service to All)Global organization Ananda Marga (“Path of Bliss”)Complete and comprehensive system of spiritual practiceComprehensive spiritual and social philosophyThe Sixteen Points of daily practiceNeohumanism, the cult of love for all created beings of the universeProgressive Utilization Theory (Prout), a socio-economic theory for a better worldAMURT (Ananda Marga Universal Relief Team)Baba Nam Kevalam kiirtan mantraKaoshikii and Tandava (physically, psychically and spiritually beneficial exercises)Over 5,000 Prabhat Samgiita (Songs of the New Dawn)Microvita theory (said to be 200 years ahead of its time)Ananda Marga Gurukula (Ananda Marga’s education system)Yogic Treatments and Natural RemediesThe sciences of yoga psychology and biopsychologyNotes on Ideal FarmingAnanda Nagar and many other master units (spiritual ecovillages) around the worldFrom the Baba Centenary exhibititon ():Bábá once said, “When my work is done, I will leave immediately. I won’t remain even a single extra moment.” By 1990 he had developed a number of health problems, including diabetes and high blood pressure, stemming from the after-effects of his poisoning and his strenuous workload. He had suffered two heart attacks and had been undergoing a course of treatment at Woodlands Hospital, where one day he said, “The future has come, the crimson dawn has already arrived. Just go on doing your duty. The work is already finished.”That was the first of a series of hints Bábá gave in the days to come of his imminent departure from this world. But despite the hints, he had created the circumstances by which no one began to realize their significance until the eve of his departure on 20 October 1990. That very evening, during a reporting session of Prout workers and márgiis at Madhu Koraka, Tiljala, he had everyone repeat with their hands on their hearts this oath that he had given a few days earlier to ASD (Ánanda Márga Sevá Dal) workers:“All my energy, all my mind, all my thoughts and all my deeds are to be goaded onto the path of collective elevation of human society, without neglecting other living beings and inanimate objects, right from this moment until the very last point of my living on this earth.”Then he talked about the dangers of communalism before quoting the concluding lines of a poem by Rabindranath Tagore:“Serpents are exhaling venom everywhere. The sweet gospels of peace sound like empty mockery. That is why on the eve of my departure from this world, I send out a clarion call to those who are preparing in every house to fight against the demons in human form.”He then said: “Serpents are exhaling venom everywhere. Now at this critical juncture, should we go on preaching the gospels of peace? No, no, no, no! So, before my departure from the world…”Suddenly everyone became acutely aware of the possibility of Bábá’s imminent departure.“…said Rabindranath…”They all breathed a (soon to be proven misplaced) sigh of relief.“…I have made the necessary preparations for the fight against these demons. Do you all follow?”“Yes, Bábá,” everyone replied.“What Rabindranath said 60 years ago is also true in this last portion of the twentieth century. Do you all understand?”“Yes, Bábá,” they answered.
“Can I depend on you?” he asked.
“Yes, Bábá,” they replied. As quoted in Anandamurti: The Jamalpur Years, Dádá Keshavánanda recalls what happened the following day, 21 October 1990:“On the last day his health actually improved. It was better than it had been in a long time. The morning was normal. He was working with the same tremendous speed that he had shown during these last months. Though he had composed the final two Prabhát Saḿgiitas late the previous night, he rose at three o’clock as usual to perform his spiritual practices. Later he reviewed the work of various departments and gave instructions while shaving; even this was a usual part of his hectic schedule. He always told us, ‘You should be prepared to die while working; but it is even better to work while dying.’“Shortly before two in the afternoon, he said to me, ‘I want to think.’ As I shut the door I thought to myself that he had never said such a thing before. After a few minutes he called me. I believe it was during those minutes that he carefully reviewed all his plans and confirmed that nothing remained to be done. He asked me to send one of the new avadhútas in to see him. He spent one hour alone with that dádá. That was the last work of Bábá’s life, personal attention given to a young wholetimer. After that he told me, ‘I want to rest now.’ These words also he had never spoken before. About five minutes later he rang the call-bell. When I came in he pointed to his chest and said, ‘Heart’. I ran to bring the [márgii] doctors. They came quickly… but when they felt for his pulse their faces turned ashen. His life force had gone.”Bábá had left his body. The time was 3:23 pm.Five days later thousands of devotees packed Tiljala’s compound for the memorial ceremony and cremation of his mortal frame. A big six-pointed pratiik had been built, on which Bábá’s body was laid. The pyre of sandalwood was lit and a flock of doves circled directly above it as if in salutation. Even Prakrti shed tears in the form of rain for a few seconds. For the next few hours the flames engulfed and gradually consumed the mahásambhúti of Táraka Brahma.Once while Bábá was in jail he had said, “I am not this physical body. This physical body is not me. If you want to know me work for my mission, because I have merged myself in my mission. I am within your heart and you are within my heart. Devotion alone can demand my physical presence.”He had also once said, “In the past I helped sádhakas to obtain the blissful state, I am helping sádhakas at present, and I shall help also in the future through other means, even when I shall not remain physically.”
